Science of Learning

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

At our Tamahere model Country School, teaching and learning are grounded in the Science of Learning — research that explains how children learn best, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.

This means that the lessons we teach are intentional, structured, and evidence-informed. Teachers carefully design learning so that new knowledge builds on what students already know, is taught in manageable steps, and is revisited over time to strengthen understanding and memory. Clear learning goals, explicit teaching, and guided practice help students feel confident and supported as they learn.

We recognise that learning is not just academic. A strong sense of belonging, positive relationships, and emotional well-being are essential for our learners to thrive. Our classrooms are calm, inclusive environments where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow.

By using the Science of Learning as our foundation, we support every learner to have the best possible opportunity to succeed, develop independence, and build the skills they need for lifelong learning.
