We are the Junior Syndicate at Tamahere Model Country School. In our syndicate there are between 5-7 (depending on what time of year) classes from Year 0 to Year 2. We also have a very special class called the Tupu class which is currently in Tawa 19 and happens on Wednesday mornings from 8.30-11pm. The Tupu class is a class that supports the transition between preschool and starting school. Children have up to eight sessions with Gillian Stantiall preparing them for school.
Here are some pictures of the playground spaces for our Taupiri students to use during break times.

Within the structure of a typical day in the Taupiri Syndicate, we would have the roll and karakia, followed by (not necessarily in this order) Wordwork, Writing, Reading, Maths, PE, explicit teaching of PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning). We also have fortnightly Kapa haka sessions, daily te reo Māori, inquiry learning on a topic that we are covering that term which could involve Aotearoa Histories, Science, Health or Technology. As a syndicate we sometimes have an afternoon put aside for learner agency called ‘waa tahi’ (which means, playing together) when activities are put out across the syndicate for the children to choose what they would like to do, this is a creative space and the students very much enjoy these afternoons.
We follow a Structured Literacy and Maths Plan. The literacy and maths curriculum guide the learning that our students do through progressions that are broken into descriptors. On most school nights, once routines have been established in classes, books or readers will go home to read together, this helps establish regular routines but more importantly reading together also helps children revise what they have learned at school. Maths, basic facts go home with students from around mid Year for the Year 2 students. Spelling is part of our weekly programme from Year 0. And spelling words are sent home to be learned and applied to everyday sentences. There is also an inquiry question that goes home every week so children can discuss what they are learning at school with their whānau.
Alongside core learning, our students learn about how to be a good friend and make good choices. We live by our school vision which can be found on this website. We encourage students to be the best they can be because it is the right thing to do.
The Taupiri Syndicate sets children up with solid foundations in all core areas of learning. We value the involvement parents have with spelling, maths and reading at home, also supporting us to help students become independent with their belongings and learning.
We look forward to welcoming you into our space. It’s a great space to be.
